Certificate of Origin (CoO)
A Certificate of Origin (CoO) is an essential international trade document that certifies the "nationality" of the goods being exported. It serves as a formal declaration that the products were wholly obtained, produced, or manufactured in India. In India, these are primarily issued digitally via the DGFT Common Digital Platform.
It is required for almost every international shipment to satisfy customs regulations in the destination country.
To Claim Tax Benefits: Mandatory for "Preferential" trade where the importer wants to pay lower or zero customs duty under Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).
Customs Clearance: To verify that the goods do not originate from a sanctioned or restricted country.
Trade Statistics: For governments to track trade flows and enforce import quotas.
Required Documents
Commercial Invoice: Clearly stating the country of origin as "India."
Packing List: Detailing the weights and dimensions of the shipment.
Bill of Lading / Airway Bill: Proof of the actual shipment and transport route.
Manufacturer’s Declaration: For Preferential CoO, a declaration confirming the goods meet the "Rules of Origin" (local content percentage).
Shipping Bill: Copy of the export declaration filed with Indian Customs.
