ICEGATE (Indian Customs Electronic Gateway)

ICEGATE is the national portal of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) that facilitates Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) between the trade community and the Customs Department. It acts as a digital "control center" where all communications, document filings, and duty payments for international trade are handled electronically.

ICEGATE registration is a statutory requirement for anyone involved in cross-border trade in India:

• Mandatory Customs Filing: Required to electronically file the Bill of Entry (for imports) and the Shipping Bill (for exports). Without it, you cannot legally clear goods through customs.

• Duty Payments: Necessary for making online payments of Customs Duties, cess, and other taxes.

• Tracking & Verification: Used to track the real-time status of shipments, verify AD Codes, and check Duty Drawback or IGST Refund status.

• e-SANCHIT: Mandatory for uploading digital copies of supporting documents (like invoices or certificates) required for customs assessment.

• Eligible Users: It is mandatory not just for Importers/Exporters, but also for Customs Brokers (CHAs), Airlines, Shipping Lines, and Freight Forwarders.

Required Documents

• Import-Export Code (IEC): A self-attested copy of the IEC issued by DGFT.

• PAN Card: Of the entity or the authorized signatory.

• Aadhaar Card: Of the authorized person (linked with Digi-locker for easier verification).

• Digital Signature (DSC): A Class 3 DSC is mandatory for signing and submitting customs documents.

• Authorization Letter: A formal letter on the company's letterhead authorizing the individual to act on behalf of the business.

• Identity Proof: Scanned colored copies of the Voter ID, Passport, or Driving License of the applicant.

• Specific Licenses: (For agents) CHA License, Shipping Line License, or Airline License.
