IEC (Importer-Exporter Code)
The Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) is a key 10-digit business identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). It acts as a "passport" for your business to enter the international market. In recent updates, for businesses registered under GST, the IEC is the same as the Permanent Account Number (PAN) of the entity, though it must still be separately registered and activated on the DGFT portal.
IEC registration is mandatory for almost all commercial import and export activities in India:
Customs Clearance: Required by customs authorities to clear any shipment entering or leaving Indian borders.
International Payments: Mandatory for banks to facilitate the transfer of money to foreign suppliers or to receive payments from international buyers.
Export Incentives: Necessary for exporters to claim benefits, subsidies, or refunds under various government schemes like the Foreign Trade Policy.
Shipping Documentation: Must be quoted on all major shipping documents, including the Bill of Entry and Shipping Bill.
Exceptions: Not required for goods imported/exported for personal use (not connected to trade) or by Government of India departments.
Required Documents
PAN Card: Of the individual (proprietor) or the business entity.
Identity Proof: Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, or Passport of the applicant.
Bank Proof: A cancelled cheque or a Bank Certificate that clearly shows the account holder's name and IFSC code.
Address Proof: A copy of the Sale Deed, Rent Agreement, or a recent Utility Bill (electricity/telephone) in the name of the business.
Digital Photograph: A clear passport-sized photo of the authorized signatory.
