If you’re importing stuff into India , you already know compliance can be like, a full time gig that never really ends. Between supply chain maze things, inventory tracking, and those sales numbers that just won’t wait, the last thing you need is some regulatory roadblock popping up when you’re already busy.
And if you haven’t checked the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) portals lately , well… there’s a huge backend change happening right now, and it needs your immediate attention, like today kind of attention.
As of June 28, 2026, the CPCB discontinued the older Plastic EPR portal, and moved all your user data into the newly built Common EPR Portal (CEPR).
This single-window setup is meant to bring together compliance for every waste category—plastic, e-waste, battery, and tyre waste. Sounds smooth, right? long-term efficiency and all. But the transition phase has a real, time-sensitive catch: you have to verify the migrated data right away.
Here’s why you cannot just “deal with it later”, like it won’t matter.
The Migration Trap: why “wait and see” hurts you, when government databases migrate massive volumes of records, small glitches happen. Sure, the CPCB did the heavy lifting of transferring your business data into CEPR, but the duty to check accuracy sits firmly on you as a Producer, Importer, or Brand Owner (PIBO).
A lot of businesses think they can just verify their account once the next annual return comes around. That approach is risky , and kinda unstable.
If you wait too long and then discover a data mismatch, you may run into:
• Filing blocks, where you can’t submit returns or obtain EPR certificates until corrections are done.
• Lapsed registrations, if migration doesn’t properly link your details , your registration can appear as lapsed, and then selling packaged goods becomes legally impossible.
• Show-cause notices, where inconsistencies between your EPR details and GST filings can automatically trigger scrutiny, and harsher penalties.
Bottom line: a tech glitch during migration is not a “free pass” excuse for missing deadlines. It’s on you to spot, and report discrepancies now.
What Importers need to check right now, no need to panic, but don’t delay either. Set aside about 20 minutes today, gather your compliance team, and go through this quick verification list.
1. The Single Sign-On (SSO) Check: For access to the new CEPR portal, you must register and link using the exact same Company PAN and Authorized Person PAN that you used on the old portals. Even a tiny typo, or a PAN mismatch, can stop your historical data from syncing.
2. Cross-check your categories: If you import different regulated products ( for example electronics that come wrapped in plastic ) you’re managing multiple EPR duties at once. Confirm that every relevant category—Plastic Waste, E-Waste, Battery Waste, and so on—mapped correctly into your single new CEPR account.
3. Audit your existing certificates: This is the big one. Review your EPR fulfilment certificates, plus your past consumption data (total weight by category and by state).
• Did the historical credits migrate over correctly?
• Do your prior volumes align with your own internal records and GST filings?
4. Authorized signatory details: Confirm the signatory’s name, email, and mobile number are still accurate and current. If those fields got scrambled during migration, you could miss alerts and OTPs needed for future filings.
Found a mismatch? Here’s what to do
If you spot an issue , don’t try to improvise a workaround or “hack” your way around it. CPCB has already said they will handle migration-related problems directly on the new platform.
1. Document everything: Take screenshots of the incorrect info inside the new portal, and also collect your original registration certificates from the old portal.
2. Raise a ticket: Use the CEPR portal internal helpdesk to report the discrepancy as soon as possible.
3. Keep a paper trail: Save all messages, emails, and ticket numbers. If the data error causes a clash with a filing deadline, this paper trail shows you acted upfront, not after the fact.
Take control of your compliance: Moving to a Common EPR Portal is, overall, a good direction—more transparency, easier audits, and less portal juggling for importers. But the link between old and new systems means you must be proactive.
Log in today, verify your data, and then get back to the thing you actually do best: building and growing your business.
