Planning to import packaged goods into India this year? Just, stop right there. Before the shipment gets anywhere near customs, you really have to lock in your Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities (LMPC) compliance.
The rules feel way tighter for 2026, and if you get even a little off, containers can get seized, fines get brutal and then you end up with those super annoying delays. So ok, less talk, more what you actually need to know.
Golden rule: get your certificate first, seriously
You cannot bring pre-packaged retail goods into India without an LMPC Importer Registration Certificate. That means the certificate has to be in place before you ship.
Good part for 2026: these certificates are now valid indefinitely. After you get it, you only have to do a quick online update once every year, just to keep your info aligned.
The 7 “make or break” label bits
If the label doesn’t show the right info, the goods won’t pass into the market. Every single package should show these seven things right on the main display area:
1. Importer details: your company name and full address.
2. Generic product name: say what it is, not just your brand hype e.g., “Ceramic Coffee Mug” instead of only the brand.
3. Net quantity: grams, ml, pieces… whatever fits, but use the standard unit.
4. Month and year of import: yes, this one matters for tracking.
5. MRP: include the exact wording “Inclusive of all taxes.”
6. Country of origin: where it was actually made, no guessing.
7. Customer care: a working phone number plus email address.
What’s new-ish for 2026
The e-commerce trap
Are you moving inventory through Amazon, Flipkart, or Shopify? Starting July 2026, these platforms enforce a strict rule: there must be a searchable “Country of Origin” filter. Your online listing has to match the physical packaging. If the box says “Made in Vietnam” but the listing says “Made in India,” you’re basically asking for a legal notice.
The warehouse loophole (big for bulk importers)
This one can be a real win if you import high volumes. If your business has AEO Tier-2 or Tier-3 status, you don’t need to wait for your overseas manufacturer to print and attach Indian compliance label stickers. You can bring the goods into special bonded warehouses, then apply the labels locally before the items are released to retail.
In short, treat the label artwork like it’s half the product, because legally… it kinda is. If you get it right, your 2026 shipments should glide through customs with way less drama.
