What is EPR Plastic? The Compliance System Every Brand is Talking About
5/18/2026
Plastic waste is now one of India’s most heavy environmental problems, and that’s where EPR Plastic comes in. EPR, which stands for Extended Producer Responsibility, is basically a government regulation that makes producers , importers , and brand owners take responsibility for the plastic waste that shows up from their products.
As per the Plastic Waste Management Rules, companies must register on the CPCB Plastic Waste Management Portal and make sure the plastic packaging waste is collected properly, then recycled, and ultimately disposed of in the right way. Also, businesses have to hit yearly recycling targets, and keep compliance records that can be checked later.
EPR Plastic ends up covering:
1. Manufacturers
2. Importers
3. Brand owners (PIBOs)
4. Plastic waste processors and recyclers
This framework was brought in to curb uncontrolled plastic pollution and push more sustainable recycling activities across different industries.
Now, EPR compliance is slowly turning into something mandatory for companies in FMCG, e-commerce , food packaging, electronics, and a lot of other spaces. If a company doesn’t comply, penalties can happen, registration might get cancelled, and legal action could also follow.
So as environmental rules keep getting stricter in India, EPR Plastic is no longer “optional” in any practical sense — it’s become a key part of running a responsible business and doing sustainable waste management.
